Helping Your Community

Waverly-Web-Admin | December 5th, 2019

No matter the time of year, giving back does well for your community and it can improve your mood too. Donating money, food or clothing to local charities isn’t the only way to help out. If you’re not sure where to start, try one of these ideas — or use them to inspire your own.

  1. Visit a senior center. Many of us spend the holidays with friends and family, but for those who have neither, this time of year can be very lonely. Volunteering at a senior center can help prevent feelings of isolation in some residents whose families may be too far away to visit. Many facilities have holiday programming for their residents, like caroling, baking and more — just call ahead to see if they’ll allow you to participate.
  1. Help your neighbors. Simple gestures can help build a sense of community in your neighborhood. Especially if your neighbors are older or less mobile you might offer to rake leaves, bring their trash and recycling bins up from the driveway, or shovel their sidewalk.
  1. Pay it forward. Whether you’re waiting in the drive-through line for your morning coffee or checking out at the grocery store consider picking up the tab for the person behind you. This act of paying it forward can often cause a domino effect — where the person you bought coffee or groceries for pays for the next person — that lasts for the better part of the day or longer.
  1. Volunteer at an animal shelter. Many animal rescue organizations are at or above capacity in the winter months when people bring in strays to keep them out of the cold. Even just spending a few hours with these animals can help socialize them, which will increase their chances of being adopted.

There are many ways to give back where you live. Any effort, no matter how large or small, will be greatly appreciated by your community and those in need.
