Dave Diercks knew it is time for a new knee. He had been traveling to Waterloo every three months for joint injections to help reduce the pain in his knees. They were bone on bone. He wanted to find a doctor in Waverly and Dr. Robert Bartelt came with high recommendations.
Three years ago, Dave retired from UNI after working there for thirty-five years. He knew he wanted to be back golfing by summer time so they set his surgery for April 2, 2019. Dave was back on the course six weeks later.
“Two hours after surgery I walked with help to the bathroom and four hours later I was walking to the nurses’ station and back,” Dave stated. Six weeks of therapy with Taylor Physical Therapy and he was ready to hit the course. “I worked hard at therapy and worked hard at home,” he continued.
Dave knows he will eventually need his other knee done and without a doubt will have Dr. Bartelt perform the surgery again.
Dave volunteers at WHC every Monday and every second and fourth Tuesdays in Outpatient Surgery. Dave enjoys his time as a volunteer and is happy to have such great care close to home.
