After years of knee pain, Deena Kazda saw Dr. Robert Bartelt, Waverly Health Center’s orthopedic surgery visiting specialist. “I was able to manage my knee pain for a while with pain medicine, but once it started giving out on me, I knew I needed to do something about it,” said Deena. Dr. Bartelt was one recommendation from Deena’s family practice provider. “I knew I wanted to see Dr. Bartelt. He did my husband’s shoulder surgery and did a great job.”
When Deena came in for her visit, Dr. Bartelt told Deena that her knee was bone on bone, and recommended a total knee replacement. Deena’s surgery was in June. It was Dr. Bartelt’s first total knee replacement surgery at Waverly Health Center. “Everything went very good. The nurse that started my IV was great. It was the first time I’ve had an IV started without crying!” recalls Deena.
“The team was excellent! At my post-op visit, the nurse took extra care to make sure I was healing the best that I could.” Part of Deena’s recovery involved physical therapy at WHC. She went three times a week for six weeks. “Everyone heals differently, but PT really helped me get better quicker.”
Deena offers this advice to others who may be having knee pain, “Get it taken care of. Don’t wait and don’t suffer through.” Deena is now six months post-surgery and is doing well. The nerves around her knee are still a bit tender, but Dr. Bartelt told her they may take up to a year to heal fully. She is happy she had the surgery and recommends Dr. Bartelt to others needing care.
