Valuable Volunteer

Waverly-Administrator | March 7th, 2017

In 2005, Waverly Health Center opened its new Centennial Pavilion. It also gained a valuable volunteer. Barb Fricke of Waverly, a retired special education teacher, began as a volunteer after she was asked. “I saw an ad in the paper for volunteering at WHC. With the addition of the new building, the health center was looking for more volunteers. I thought about it, but never took it any further than that until Laurie Everhardt, volunteer services manager at the time, asked me. I was talking with her after water aerobics one morning and she shared how she was having trouble getting volunteers for a 7 a.m. shift. I told her I’d do it,” said Barb.

Barb has been a welcoming face at the red entrance ever since. “I bring patients or visitors to different areas of the hospital, take care of scheduling red entrance volunteers, and work on a variety of small hospital projects.” In addition, Barb helps train new volunteers and served on the Auxiliary board since 2006.

“Barb is a valuable volunteer and has been a tremendous leader. She has taken on many roles that the Auxiliary and volunteer services have been very grateful for. All the volunteers at Waverly Health Center are indispensable and they help make WHC the wonderful place that it is,” said Melinda Pitt, volunteer services manager.

Since 2005, Barb has logged 2,407 hours at WHC. “I find a lot of purpose in volunteering. I get to meet a lot of people and its fun. I wouldn’t want to give it up.” Barb also volunteers at Cedar Valley Friends of the Family and St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.

Barb has been amazed with the amount of growth during her time with WHC. “The volume of volunteers has really increased. Along those same lines, the amount of staff and visiting specialists has as well. Having these services here in Waverly is a real benefit for our community.”

WHC is always looking for more valuable volunteers. If you are eager to contribute to the hospitals mission to provide high quality patient-centered health care, call Melinda Pitt, volunteer services manager at (319) 483-4076.
