October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and Waverly Health Center (WHC) is shining a spotlight on the importance of breast health. WHC recently expanded its imaging lineup with the NeoCoil breast coil, designed to work with the GE Voyager MRI, one of the most advanced imaging systems on the market. Unlike traditional MRI coils, NeoCoil is built specifically for breast imaging, allowing radiologists to detect cancers that may not appear on mammograms or ultrasounds. It is especially valuable for women with dense breast tissue or higher risk factors.

WHC partners with Radiology Consultants of Iowa (RCI), ensuring all mammograms and advanced imaging are interpreted by board-certified radiologists. “This level of technology is extraordinary for a hospital of this size,” said radiologist, Dr. Robert Dolan. “It allows us to detect potential problems sooner and give patients the answers they need faster, which can make a real difference in outcomes.” With this investment, WHC has positioned itself at the forefront of breast imaging in northeast Iowa, offering care that rivals larger hospitals while keeping patients close to home.

When Care Becomes Personal

At the heart of WHC’s breast health program is Breast Care Navigator Emily Schut, who guides women through every step of their breast care journey—from scheduling screenings to navigating diagnoses and treatment. For years, Emily supported women with compassion and understanding. Then, her own life changed when she was diagnosed with breast cancer herself.

“My patients became my teachers,” Emily shared. “I suddenly understood the fear, the questions and the hope that come with a cancer diagnosis. That experience is why I’m even more passionate about walking beside women today.”

Emily Breast Care Navigator for Waverly Health CenterEmily’s journey inspired her to start WHC’s Breast Cancer Support Group, now a vital source of connection and encouragement for women across the local area. The group meets on the second Tuesday of each month and offers a safe space to share experiences, learn from local speakers and find strength in community.

One participant said it best: “I didn’t realize how much I needed this until I came. It’s been healing for my body and my spirit.”

In recognition of her compassion, leadership and impact, Emily was recently honored with the 2025 Hospital Hero Award by the Iowa Hospital Association (IHA). A testament to her dedication and her commitment.

Full-Circle Care

For WHC, breast health is about more than just annual physical. By combining advanced imaging, the dedication of caregivers like Emily and the strength of peer support, WHC is creating a complete circle of care for women and families.

“Our mission is to deliver high-quality, person-centered care,” said Chief Outpatient Services Officer, Joni Poppe. “When it comes to breast health, that means giving women access to advanced diagnostics and the comfort of knowing they have a whole community behind them.”
