For Derek and Alex Gielau of Denver, July 3, 2025, marked the beginning of a long and unforgettable journey. Induced at 8 p.m. that evening at Waverly Health Center (WHC), Alex wouldn’t deliver their baby boy, Otto, until two days later. “It felt like a marathon,” Alex said. “The nurses were so encouraging and constantly checking on me. They never left us feeling alone.”

Otto born at WHC July 2025.

Otto Bennett made his debut at a healthy 10 pounds, 4 ounces. This wasn’t the Gielaus’ first time at the Waverly Birthing Center. Ten years earlier, they had welcomed their first son, Max, into the world. “It was hard to believe we were back in the same place, a decade later, experiencing it all over again,” Derek said. “It felt like coming full circle.”

Max born at WHC June 2015.

Shortly after delivery, Otto began having difficulty regulating his blood sugar levels. It was a scary moment for the family. Baby Otto was transferred to the NICU in Cedar Rapids for specialized care. The staff at WHC ensured the family was well-prepared and emotionally supported for the next step.

“We never felt alone,” Alex said. “The nurses checked in on us, answered every question and were so genuine. Their care meant everything.”

Once their baby was at home, the Gielaus made a special trip back to Waverly. They brought a thank-you basket to the nurses and staff who had cared for them during such an intense experience.

“We just wanted to say thank you in person,” Derek said. “They went above and beyond, and we’ll never forget that.”

Stories like the Gielaus’ show how thoughtful, hands-on care can leave a lasting impact. For this family, it wasn’t just about welcoming a new baby into the world. It was about feeling seen, supported and truly cared for like family.
