Lactation Consultation Services

Welcoming a new baby into your life is a joyful and life-changing experience. At Waverly Health Center, we know that feeding your baby— especially through breastfeeding —can come with challenges. That’s why our Lactation Consultation Services are here to support families every step of the way.

What is a lactation consultant?

A lactation consultant is a breastfeeding specialist. She works with the family to teach them how to feed their babies by giving education and resources specific to each baby’s needs.

  • Breastfeeding moms may have one or more of these concerns:
  • Slow weight gain of baby
  • Breast and nipple pain
  • Going back to work
  • Jaundice
  • Low milk supply
  • Oversupply of milk
  • Problems with latching on
  • Weaning
  • Baby having difficulty swallowing/sucking (noisy feeds or weak suck)
  • Premature baby
  • Weaning baby from a nipple shield

With support, many of these issues can be dealt with early to promote your baby’s well-being and growth. Lactation support can make an impact on your ability to reach your breastfeeding goals.

Roles of a lactation consultant:

  • Assessing mom and baby’s lactation needs
  • Identifying breastfeeding problems or concerns
  • Providing resources and education to families
  • Working with families to make and carry out a personal feeding plan
  • Considering cultural, psychosocial and nutritional goals and needs of families
  • while providing support
  • Giving support and encouragement to help mothers meet their breastfeeding goals
  • Encouraging and supporting breastfeeding for one year and beyond
  • Providing education and guidance to families about feeding needs regardless of the child’s age

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I tour the birthing center?

Yes! We offer tours so you can see our labor and delivery suites, meet some of our staff and ask questions. Contact us to schedule a tour or ask your provider for more information.

When should I pre-register for my delivery?

We recommend pre-registering during your second trimester to help make your check-in process quicker and easier when you go into labor. You can call our team or complete the pre-registration form at your provider’s office.

What type of birth options do you support?

We support a variety of birth plans, including natural childbirth, epidurals and medically-assisted deliveries. Our team will work with you to honor your preferences while ensuring the safety of you and your baby.

Can my support person spend the night?

Yes. We welcome support partners and encourage them to stay with you throughout your birthing experience. Our spacious birthing suites are designed for comfort and privacy, featuring pull-out couches and overnight accommodations so your support person can rest comfortably by your side.

What happens if my baby needs special care?

Most babies can be cared for right here by our experienced labor, delivery and nursery team. However, if your newborn requires a higher level of care, we work closely with regional neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) to ensure safe and timely transport. Our team coordinates with trusted specialists to provide a seamless transfer and keep you informed. Your baby’s safety and well-being are always our top priority.

How long will I stay in the hospital after giving birth?

Most patients stay about 24–48 hours after a vaginal delivery and a bit longer after a cesarean birth, depending on your recovery. Your care team will monitor your health and make sure you’re ready before you go home.

Can my baby see a pediatrician at Waverly Health Center?

Yes! We have pediatric providers who care for newborns right here at Waverly Health Center. Your baby will be seen by a pediatrician during your hospital stay, and you can continue their care at one of our local clinics after discharge. If you don’t have a pediatrician selected, we can help you choose one that meets your family’s needs making the transition from hospital to home as smooth as possible.
