For OB Educator Shantel Maloy, Waverly Health Center (WHC) isn’t just where she works. When Shantel and her husband prepared to welcome their daughter, Emerley, there was no question about where they wanted to deliver. As someone who works closely with expectant parents every day, Shantel has seen the care, compassion and professionalism of the Birthing Center team firsthand. Experiencing it as a patient made it even more meaningful.

Emerley was delivered by Dr. Ivey, with Dr. Dupic assisting, and surrounded by a team Shantel knew and trusted. Hannah and Jodi, her delivery nurses, were by her side, along with Stacy Huck, ARNP, who also came in to be part of the special moment.

“When I came up after my scheduled C-section, Jodi had already decorated my room,” Shantel said. “And Hannah and I are good friends, so being able to have her there for my delivery is something I will always cherish.”

Delivering at the place she works brought a deeper sense of peace and confidence. “I knew Emerley and I would be well taken care of,” Shantel shared. “I know the skills and knowledge of our staff, and being on the patient side really opened my eyes to how much the little things matter.”

One of those moments stood out during the quiet overnight hours. “Maddie, RN, on night shift would make sure I was getting enough rest and even offered to take Emerley if I needed it,” she said. “Those small gestures make such a big difference.”

The excitement around Emerley’s arrival could be felt throughout the unit. For months, coworkers had been guessing her name, weight and length. Once she arrived, staff stopped in to check on the family, celebrate the moment and even bring small gifts. “Everyone was so excited to finally meet her,” Shantel said.

As someone who both teaches families and works alongside the nurses and providers every day, Shantel saw a new side of their dedication. “The staff was respectful, helpful and incredibly attentive,” she said. “They didn’t just talk to me, they made sure my husband understood everything that was happening too. That means so much.”

Looking back, Shantel is grateful she chose to deliver where she works. “I couldn’t have asked for better nurses or providers to care for Emerley and me,” she said. “I’ve seen this team go above and beyond for patients but experiencing it myself made me appreciate it even more.”

Now, as both a mom and an OB Educator, Shantel carries an even deeper connection to the care she helps families receive every day. “For anyone thinking about delivering at Waverly Health Center, I strongly recommend it,” she said. “You’ll find a team that listens, supports you and provides the highest level of care.”
