When Rick Truax retired earlier this year, he found that picking the most fitting Medicare plan was challenging. That’s when he enlisted the help of Bruce Coleman.

Coleman is a Waverly Health Center (WHC) volunteer and a counselor with the Senior Health Information Insurance Program (SHIIP). SHIIP is a free and objective Medicare health insurance counseling service of the State of Iowa Insurance Division.

WHC serves as the sponsor site for SHIIP in Bremer County. WHC has several trained SHIIP counselors who provide confidential and unbiased mentorship to hundreds of residents each year in Bremer County and the surrounding areas.

“Bruce is extremely knowledgeable and was incredibly helpful,” said Truax. “He patiently guided me through the process and taught me at the same time.”

Coleman is known for being thorough. He has helped nearly 1,700 community members with their Medicare plans during his 17 years as a volunteer SHIIP counselor. There are many choices for someone starting the Medicare process. Truax described his options as “overwhelming.”

Although the information needed to register for Medicare is all available online, Truax believes it was Coleman who made the process seamless. “It was essential to have a trusted guide,” said Truax. “Bruce is amazing. He’s my hero.”

SHIIP counselors are available year-round to assist with Medicare plans. To receive free, confidential and unbiased assistance, call the SHIIP line at (319) 483-1300.
