Life took an unexpected turn for a Janesville woman after learning she had breast cancer. After experiencing a burning and itching sensation in her hands that spread throughout her body, she visited a dermatologist. She soon realized it was more than a skin issue after finding a lump in her breast.
She turned to Waverly Health Center (WHC) for a mammogram and biopsy. Breast Care Navigator Emily Schut delivered the news to the patient about the diagnosis of triple negative, stage three breast cancer.
“Hearing that you are positive for breast cancer is overwhelming and comes with a mix of emotions,” said Schut. “My role is to support each person through their journey from diagnosis through treatment. As an advocate and resource, I help people understand and navigate next steps.”
Breast cancer affects roughly one in eight women nationwide. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends every woman have a yearly mammogram beginning at age 40. In many cases, breast cancer is found on a mammogram before a lump can be felt.
The WHC mammography team is made up of five certified mammographers and the breast care navigator. Last year, the team completed more than 3,000 mammograms.
After her diagnosis, the patient from Janesville went through chemotherapy, a lumpectomy, radiation and will continue immunotherapy for several more months. She is now cancer free and getting a little better every day.

“You don’t realize how many people have breast cancer until you have it yourself,” said the patient. “This was a journey I never thought I would experience. I can’t say enough about the care I received. They were all so good to me.”
